Follicle stimulating hormone is one among the gonadotrophic hormones, the opposite being luteinising hormone. Both are released by the pituitary into the bloodstream. Follicle stimulating hormone is one among the hormones essential to pubertal development and therefore the function of women’s ovaries and men’s testes. In women, this hormone stimulates the expansion of ovarian follicles within the ovary before the discharge of an egg from one follicle at ovulation. It also increases oestradiol production. In men, follicle stimulating hormone stimulate sperm production (spermatogenesis).
